Girodet (Masters and Composers)'s biography

Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, also called Anne-Louis Girodet was a French painter born in 1767 in Montargis and died in 1824 in Paris.

Born as Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy (or Roussy), the child grew up in the town of Montargis. Girodet was very good at arts: he played the violin, drew and painted. He chose to practice the last one. Girodet went to Paris in 1785 to study painting with David and he was even one of his most talented pupils.

His parents died when he was young: his father died in 1784 and his mother in 1787. He was then assisted by Dr. Trioson, a close friend of the family. Moreover, he decided to adopt him in 1809. This is why the painter was called Girodet de Roucy-Trioson and then Girodet-Trioson.

Girodet participated in the Prix de Rome in 1787. Unfortunately, he was disqualified since he used sketches from the outside. The following year, he won the second price with "The Death of Tatius". In 1879 he won the first price thanks to "Joseph Recognized by his Brothers". The artist then went to Rome where he painted for exemple "The Sleep of Endymion" and then went to some other Italian cities.

Girodet went back to France in 1795, where he painted some great masterpieces as "Mademoiselle Lange as Danae", "Geography Lesson" or even "The Funeral of Atala". At the Prix de la Décennie (Price of the Decade) in 1810, Girodet was the laureate thanks to "Scene of the Flood". David, his former master only won the second price with "Intervention of the Sabine Women".

A few years later, Girodet dedicated to poetry and to the achievement of frescoes for the castle of Compiègne in France. He even became a professor at the School of Fine Arts of Paris in 1816. The artist died on December 9, 1824, at the age of 57.
