Rigaud (Masters and Composers)'s biography

Jacint Rigau Ros i Serra, better known as Hyacinthe Rigaud, born in Perpignan in 1659 and died in Paris in 1743 was a French Baroque painter and a specialist of Portraits.

His father was a tailor but also a painter. He was also part of a line of artists implanted in the region of Perpignan. We assume that Hyacinthe Rigaud was the pupil of Antoni Guerra Major, a great Catalan painter of his time. When his father died, his mother entrusted him to Peter Chypolt, a gilder of Carcassonne. This explains in particular the knowledge of Rigaud in gilding.

In 1671, Rigaud was sent to Montpellier to continue his artistic training. He would have also been a pupil of Paul Pezet. A few years later, the artist would have gone to Lyon.

In 1681, Hyacinthe Rigaud decided to go to Paris. He began his career in a neighborhood saturated with artists: painters, gilders, engravers or even musicians and publishers. The following year, the artist presented himself at the Prix de Rome and won the first prize. He was also registered by the Academy two years later, in 1684.

He received many orders from private individuals, but he also created designs for several buildings.

In 1695, Rigaud returned to Perpignan where he received the honors of the city. His productions invade the kingdom. He even exhibited his paintings at the Salon in 1704.

His wife, Elisabeth de Gouy died on March 15, 1743, while she was 75. Hyacinthe Rigaud, meanwhile, died a few years later, on December 29 1743. The artist made during his lifetime many portraits, like "Louis XIV in royal costume", "Portrait of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans" but also a triptych of Louis XV.
